Harlem's evolution: upscale, trendy, elegant, pricey

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Minton's Jazz Supper Club just opened Monday evening. The original Minton's opened in the 1930s. The new Minton's is the latest upscale establishment to open in Harlem. You can get your martinis extra dirty, and gentleman: make sure you wear a jacket.

Restaurateur Alexander Smalls is the executive chef at Minton's and at The Cecil, just next door on West 118th Street, which opened last month. Its menu is about as diverse as it gets: Afro-Asian American fusion.

Harlem has seen a huge revitalization in recent years. St. Nicholas Street is filled with popular bistros. An old church will soon become home to new residential and retail space.

Curtis Archer of the Harlem Community Development Corporation said the area is fast becoming the new East Village.

What is not so positive: the price. One local resident told Fox 5 he pays $2,600 a month for his one-bedroom apartment.

Change isn't always easy. But some Harlem residents say they wouldn't have it any other way.
