Karol Mason Talks About Bullying

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. One of the girls accused of bullying Rebecca Sedwick, the 12-year-old Florida girl who ultimately committed suicide, may have been a victim of bullying herself.

The girl's mother, 30-year-old Vivian Vosburg was arrested and is facing two counts of child abuse and four counts of child neglect.

Police found video of Vosburg punching and hitting her kids. Someone videotaped it and then posted it on Facebook.

Assistant Attorney General for Justice Programs Karol Mason happened to be in Philadelphia this morning, and spoke to Mike and Sheinelle on Good Day to share her thoughts on the case and the implementation of laws to charge bullies and their parents.

"One of the things we've been focused on at the Office of Justice Programs is looking at when you see this behavior from kids, figuring out what's happened in their lives, because the behavior is really symptomatic of something else."

"I think it is complicated," Mason continues. "What we all need to do is take a step back and slow down and think about it and look the at the circumstances and look at is what happening and look at what we, as a community, can do to prevent these situation from his happening in the future."

In 2012, Philadelphia received $1.5 million to expand efforts to reduce youth violence. Philadelphia and Camden were chosen to join the forum on youth violence prevention, where schools work with police in anti-violence programs.
