Hundreds walk downtown to raise money for HIV, AIDS

Updated:
PHOENIX -

$500,000 would go a long way in helping AIDS service agencies in the valley, so hundreds of people went out early Saturday to do just that.

They were off running, not just for their own health, but for the health of those living with HIV and AIDS.

One participant could be heard chanting the message, "We're greater than AIDS, greater."

The money raised Sunday will help fund 18 different agencies committed to helping those affected by HIV and AIDS.

"The federal funding has been declining and is going to continue to decline and community support is critically important for these 18 agencies. We've already lost 20 agencies that went away because of lack of federal funding," said Kit Kloeckl, with Aunt Rita's Foundation.

Besides the 5K runners, hundreds of walkers pounded the pavement.

Some carried pictures of loved ones who they walked to honor and remember.

"I lost my son Richard in 2004 to HIV and I made him a promise that I would try to make a difference, so since 2004, Team Richard has raised $100,000 for AIDS," said Barb Eldridge.

The AIDS Walk Phoenix and 5K Run wound through downtown Phoenix. Some brought their best friends along for the excitement.

All along the route, entertainment was staged to keep walkers and runners motivated.

Everyone kept their eyes on pulling together to make a difference.

Last year the AIDS walk raised $376,000; the goal this year was $500,000.

All of the money that was raised goes to 18 HIV and AIDS service agencies in the valley.
