ATLANTA -

A congratulatory send-off salute at Atlanta City Hall on Saturday for Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian.

The Civil Rights icon is one of the six honorees selected this year to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.

Local dignitaries joined family and friends in honoring Rev. Vivian during the Saturday afternoon event.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation's highest civilian honor. Its recipients are recognized for making exceptional meritorious contributions to the security or national interest of the United States.

Vivian will be honored alongside the late Bayard Rustin, who was a King advisor and Civil Rights activist.

Other recipients this year include Former-President Bill Clinton, country music legend Loretta Lynn, former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee, writer and activist Gloria Steinem, Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Ernie Banks, media mogul Oprah Winfrey and astronaut Sally Ride, who will be honored posthumous for her contribution to space exploration.

The medal ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 20.
