NYC is most haunted city in USA

Posted: Updated:

Within the foundation of New York City, trapped inside some of its most historic buildings, New York has been called the most haunted city in the United States.

One tour guide says that 3am is the time of the devil as he takes people on tours looking for the ‘Phantom of Gay street’. “It's a man with a big top hat” the tour guide says. “Seen around here and just appearing out of nowhere.”

Greg Young is a writer with the Bowery Boys. The group has documented Manhattan's restless spirits like Midtowns Belasco Theatre, where the owner supposedly never left. “Some actors will still smell a ghostly scent of cigar smell." Bowens said.

Sometimes ghost stories in Manhattan are literally right beneath our feet. Like at Washington Square Park, which was once a hanging ground during the American Revolution. It's estimated some 15,000 bodies are still buried there and many people report feeling the energy and presence of all those people buried there.

The Merchants House Museum on East 4th street was built in 1832 is also a victim of hauntings.  Board member Anthony Bellov says the former occupants may still be present.

“More than once, where we'll ask a question and a comment, and when we play it back, we'll hear a voice that was not there.”

The Ear Inn on Spring Street is one of the oldest taverns in the city. It's also where manager Gary says his own relatives were spooked by what some say is the spirit of a sailor said to haunt this historic site.

“They said the sheets were moving.” Gary said. “They were white as ghosts themselves.”

A state agency is suggesting summer shutdowns at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in the New York suburbs. The idea is to protect migrating and spawning fish who might otherwise get sucked into the plant. Indian Point takes 2.5 billion gallons a day from the Hudson River to make steam and cool its two reactors.
