Man Accused Of Owning Pipe Bombs Appears In Court

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A man charged with owning explosives found inside a Northeast Philadelphia home appeared Friday in federal court.

ATF agents arrested 36-year-old Michael Beer in Northampton County on Thursday night.

The 36-year-old could face up to 10 years behind bars.

Authorities say Beer has no known criminal history.

But FOX 29's Kelly Hessedal did some digging into his background to find out more about him.

It was on the 6100 block of Shisler Street where the Philadelphia Bomb Squad detonated a live pipe bomb Thursday containing propellant and several shotgun casings.

Investigators say Beer's mother had found it and five others in a cardboard box in the basement, in a spot where she kept her sons belongings after he'd moved out three months ago.

"Get the (expletive) out of here," said a woman believed to be Beer's sister, as she initially declined to tell FOX 29 News his side of the story.

She went on to say, "There's better things in life going on right now. This situation's handled, it's taken care of. Everything's fine. It's over with. It was a episode, a day in time in life yesterday, and now it's time to move on. Thank you so much, now leave my mother alone."

However, court documents reveal Beer has already admitted the devices were his. During a phone call monitored by an ATF agent, Beer stated that his mother calling the bomb squad was going to "make him look real good." And all he did was "place some shotgun shells inside a pipe." He said, "I don't know what the big deal is," adding, "you threw me under the bus."

ATF Philadelphia Special Agent Stephen Bartholomew said, "Any homemade explosive devices that somebody possess or stores illegally is a threat to the public. These things are not firecrackers. They're not fireworks."

The motive behind the pipe bombs is still unclear. However the ATF says there's no indication this incident is related to terrorism.
