HARTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

Wal-Mart says it will offer the job back to the employee who was fired for violating company policy after he says he was just trying to help a woman who was being attacked.

Kristopher Oswald, 31, says the retail giant fired him after he tried to help a woman who was being attacked in the parking lot of the Walmart store on M-59 in Hartland Township.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday while Oswald was on break. He noticed a teenager assaulting a female. Oswald says he asked the female if she needed help and she said "yes."

"When I heard the woman scream for help all I did was get out of my vehicle and approach with the intention to call the police," Oswald explains to Fox 2's Robin Schwartz. Oswald continues: "And this is when the individual, who was attacking her, lunged at me. He hit me about five or six times, my glasses went flying; I didn't throw a single punch."

The female victim had time to get away because Oswald stepped in. Oswald says when he intervened, though, two friends of the suspect jumped on top of him while he was trying to hold the suspect down.

Police have arrested the suspect involved in the incident, 17-year-old Dillon Tierney. He is charged with assault and drunk driving, and was released on $1,000 bond. His two friends were released after being questioned by police.

"As soon as the police got there, this is when my manager ran out and told me I was suspended," Oswald says. "It's shock, it's disappointing you know. You do what you think is right and that's the last thing you expect to happen."

Oswald's dismissal papers stated he violated company policy, but did not say specifically how the policy was violated. Oswald has met with an attorney. No word yet if he will accept the job offer.
