New Jersey Stinkbug Problem

Posted: Updated:
Wyckoff, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Stinkbugs are showing up all over the Garden State and New Jerseyans are not happy about it.

Wyckoff resident Patty Fitzmaurice is fed up with the stinkbug invasion that is taking over her home. She called upon Horizon Pest Control to evaluate her  situation and help rid her of these pesky bugs.

Michael Drozdick, a pest control specialist, inspected every crack and corner, up in the attic, garage and outside. He said stinkbugs usually come in from sunny sections of the home.

The main concern about these invaders is that they have no natural predators here in the northeast.

“Stinkbugs are not from here, they are of Asian descent and we’ve really only seen them here over the last few years," Drozdick said. "Which contributes to them being wide spread they have no predators. They live in trees and plants during the warmer months and this time of year it will get cooler at night and they are looking for shelter.”

Drozdick recommends that you don’t squish the bugs because that is where you will run into a problem. Squishing them sends off an aroma that attracts other stinkbugs. The best thing to do is spray them with hairspray in order to demobilize them and then pick them up with a paper towel and flush down the toilet.

The little bugs have caused over $21 billion in crop losses since their discovery in the late 1990s. They are known to feed off of apples, peaches and corn.

Fitzmaurice said the bug infestation was terrible last year and this year she is taking preventive measures.

“They are creepy looking; you see them on the wall they are creepy looking," Fitzmaurice says.  "I can deal with a little spider, better than I can deal with a stinkbug."

Horizon experts recommend a few things to help prevent your home from being invaded by stinkbugs:

• Seal any and all cracks in the home.

• Keep outdoor lighting to a minimum.

• Install screens over the chimney and attic vents.

• Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house.
