CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -

Authorities are crediting a tow truck driver for helping to stop a wrong-way driver in Cherokee County.

Just after midnight on Thursday, two deputies saw a vehicle cross over the concrete median of Highway 92 and begin to travel eastbound in the westbound lanes, according to Lt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. The wrong-way driver allegedly almost struck the deputies' vehicle and continued down Highway 92.

Billy Smith, who was driving a tow truck, saw the near-accident. He crossed over the lanes and used his wrecker to stop the wrong-way driver, according to authorities.

Deputies arrested William Scott Bently, 55, of Cartersville. He was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road and hit-and-run.

Bently remained jailed Thursday at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center. His bond was set at $4,371.
