Tempe restaurant's proceeds go to Pat Tillman Foundation

Posted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. -

A Tempe restaurant wanted to do something to help vets and their families during the government shutdown, so they turned to an organization named after a valley hero -- the Pat Tillman Foundation.

Salut in Tempe is serving up good food with a side of good will.

"We're going to take our first week of lunch and give a hundred percent of the proceeds to the Pat Tillman Foundation," says executive chef Christopher Worrell.

The restaurant just opened for lunch Monday and wanted to make it memorable by giving back to the community.

"The Tillman Foundation came clear, kind of front and center," says owner David Freedman.

Tillman, a Sun Devil football player who went on to play for the Arizona Cardinals, gave it all up to serve and die for his country.

"Being an ASU grad, Pat Tillman as well as myself and my partner in the restaurant. I think Chris our head chef, being a military vet. It seemed like a perfect fit."

So what's for lunch?

"We've got a pretty diverse menu, everything from some really great salads, burgers, paninis and really we just added the greatest grilled cheese you'll ever have in your life."

"We're running a $5 grilled cheese special with a beer," says Worrell.

Lunch specials -- and your lunch money goes to a good cause. You can't go wrong.

"It's profits for a week, but it's the difference you can make for someone's entire life."

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.
