Food tax slimmed from 2 percent to 1

PHOENIX -

The Phoenix City Council voted Wednesday night to cut the city's 2-percent food tax in half.

The vote was 8-1 in favor of the reduction.

The tax will go from 2 percent to 1 percent, or 1 cent of every dollar. Some people say that doesn't sound like much -- but to struggling families, that adds up.

The tax started in 2010 and has been a bitter issue between council members and the mayor. It was enacted because the city had a huge budget shortfall at the time.

The food tax reduction would begin in January 2014 and will continue through January 2015, when it will expire.

FOX 10's Linda Williams explains.
