East Atlanta residents band together after spike in burglaries

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A spike in burglaries in east Atlanta has residents on alert and looking out after each other.

According to the East Atlanta Security Patrol, there have been dozens of break-ins in the past few weeks – including four burglaries in a 24-hour span.

Heather Abbott-Lyon said that after men broke into her home and fired a shot into her living room floor, she's been vigilant. She's not alone.

Stephanie Logan's TV, computer and other items were stolen after burglars broke down her front door.

"We have a new front door, we put in some door armor, new locks, we have more stuff on the inside that keep people from prying the doors on the outside," Logan said.

Most of the recent burglaries have been concentrated in a relatively small area, but residents say they realize East Atlanta covers a lot of territory and police can't be everywhere all the time, so they've taken matters into their own hands.

"We email one another to keep an eye out and when we see car or truck or whatever in the neighborhood that shouldn't be, trust me, we're on the phone," said James Foster.

The break-ins have mainly been happening between dusk and midnight. In many of the cases, residents have spotted a newer model silver sedan, so residents have been on the lookout for that vehicle.

Six people were indicted Wednesday in an international ring that managed to take over more than 1,000 StubHub users' accounts and fraudulently buy tickets to such prime events as Jay-Z and Elton John concerts, a New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox game and Broadway shows like "The Book of Mormon," the Manhattan district attorney said. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said the thieves would then resell the tickets and split up the proceeds.
