Out of work and in need of money a new report suggests a growing number of people are turning their bodies into cash machines to make it through financially tough times.

According to bloomberg.com a 25-year-old Farmington Hills woman posted an online ad in October on buyandsellhair.com looking to sell up to 18 inches of her hair for $1,500. Bridie MacDonald lost her job in mortgage marketing in September, likely a casualty of interest rates that have gone up steadily since the Federal Reserve began signaling it might pull back on the stimulus program.

"I've been growing my hair out for maybe a little over two years and I just decided now was the time since I lost my job," MacDonald said. Since posting the ad she's received more than 100 responses.

And while hair is one option other women are exploring additional ways to make money such as becoming an egg donor. Bloomberg News reports many fertility clinics are seeing an increase in the number of those applying to be a donor. In fact one facility says they have seen an increase of roughly 13 percent from 2012.

In all but two quarters since the beginning of 2011 hair, eggs or kidney have been among the top four autofill results for the Google search query. While Americans can legally sell hair, breast milk and eggs, the sale and purchase of a kidney in the U.S. is against the law.

Decisions to sell things like hair, breast milk and eggs may be influenced by a labor market that's struggling to improve and unemployment benefits that are running out.

Perhaps MacDonald put it best, "it doesn't cost anything to grow your hair out and sell it for money. It's basically profit with very little work." she said.
