Man accused of making terroristic calls to 911 dispatchers

RYDAL, Ga. -

A man in the Bartow County town of Rydal is facing charges of making terroristic threats during 911 calls.

Bartow County Sheriff's dispatchers say that 46-year-old Lyle Devenpeck has made at least 67 calls to 911 in the last several years. But on Oct. 6, authorities said that Devenpeck called dispatchers and threatened to use explosives.

"I could blow up the whole Atlanta -- everything -- in an instant. One second. Boom! Gone," a voice dispatchers say was Devenpeck said.

Sgt. Jonathan Rogers says Bartow County deputies have been to Devenpeck's house on numerous occasions, but this time it was different.

"When they arrived this time and were speaking to him, he seemed a little more agitated than normal and made some specific threats, so they had to act upon that," Rogers said.

Deputies arrested and charged Devenpeck with terroristic threats, false public alarm and unlawful conduct during a 911 call.

Lt. Sheila Wilkey the 911 supervisor with the Bartow County Sheriff's Office, dispatchers take all calls seriously.

"Well, I mean, it is difficult to deal with people like that. But, of course, you know it doesn't matter if they call once or 10 times a day," Wilkey said. "We still have to consider it a 911 call and do what's appropriate."

Devenpeck has been released from Bartow County Jail on a $5,000 bond. He has been reported to the Secret Service, FBI and ATF because he threatened to blow up the United States.
