Investigation into LAX Dry Ice Bomb Continues

Posted: Updated:

The FBI is assisting local law enforcement in their investigation of a dry ice bomb that went off in an employee bathroom in a cargo area of LAX Sunday night.  Local and federal
That  blast  halted TSA screening in Terminal 2 for about 90 minutes,
authorities said,  delaying flights and leaving travelers stuck.

The explosion occurred about 7 p.m. Sunday in a restricted terminal area
not accessible to the general public, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.  Screening resumed after about 90 minutes, and the delayed flights were allowed to leave.

Firefighters found  the bathroom covered in debris, including evidence of a plastic bottle containing dry ice and believe  that a chemical reaction sparked the explosion, Eimiller said.  No other devices were found after a sweep of the terminal by K-9 officers and hazmat crews.

The FBI was investigating the incident along with the Los Angeles Police
Department, LAX police, Los Angeles Fire Department, Transportation Security
Administration and U.S. Customs and Border Inspection, authorities said.

No injuries were reported from the blast.
