Cars broken into during breast cancer walk

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

They came to make strides against breast cancer, but some heartless thieves turned them into an easy target. The pictures tell the story. Windows are smashed, and items are missing from the cars of at least 15 people who took part in Saturday's walk in Detroit.

A group from the Redford Union High School swim team was among them. They say the thieves stole anything they could find. The team members spotted the suspects still hanging around the parking lot near Woodward and Sibley so they called 911.

"My senior captain had her homecoming dress and some clothes and shoes that were taken," said Nicole Kevwitch, coach of the swim team. "Her mother suggested she look around in a few empty garbage cans; maybe they just didn't realize what it was and threw it out because it wasn't valuable to them. When she did that, she saw about eight men standing around on a corner and they had her bright pink backpack."

By the time police arrived, the suspects were gone.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is holding its monthly board meeting, two days after it heard from a panel on what it needs to do to improve its accountability and efficiency and restore public trust.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could rescind a $1-a-year lease for a park-and-ride lot near the Lincoln Tunnel. The agency's chief of real estate and development told a committee Wednesday that it should change a deal made in 2012. Published reports have alleged that former Port Authority chairman David Samson voted to approve the lease even though his law firm did business with New Jersey Transit, which operates the park-and-ride lot.
