Petty officer fights cancer battle at home

A young woman from Detroit was serving in Afghanistan when suddenly she finds herself fighting a very different kind of war: a personal one.
In May 27-year-old Angela Norfleet, a petty officer in the navy, made a life-changing discovery in the shower.

"I felt a lump, and I could actually feel it. And then, looking down, I could actually see it poking out, protruding," Norfleet tells Fox 2's Deena Centofanti.

Suddenly Norfleet is flying to Germany where doctors deliver the news: she has breast cancer.

"[The doctor] was teary eyed. He's like, 'You're so young.' I said 'It's okay, we got it early. It's going to be okay. Let's just keep moving on, let's go with the treatment plan,'" Norfleet recalls.
Now, far from the turmoil in the middle east, Norfleet is now home in Detroit battling the cancer. But, that's not all she's doing.
"I coach soccer. I volunteer, I just have to keep my mind off of it. Because to me, if you think about it for too long, you just think about it and you dwell on what 'is', when you need to be worried about what 'will be,'" Norfleet says.

Norfleet has a four-year-old daughter, Casey, who is unaware of the chemotherapy and the cancer. Casey is just happy that her mom is home.

"She just knows that mommy is sometimes sick, and mommy has to go to the doctor," Norfleet says.

Norfleet has tested positive for the breast cancer gene and soon she will have a double mastectomy to reduce her future risk. For now, she has medical science and unwavering confidence on her side.

She says, "I'm very optimistic. Everything's going to be fine. I'm confident." Her mother calls her a "tough cookie."

Norfleet's story reminds us all to know our bodies; she very well may have saved her own life by recognizing that lump.

Norfleet will be volunteering at Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in downtown Detroit Saturday, October 11.
