Recently Retired Penn State Abington Professor Charged In Child Porn Case

Posted: Updated:

Sixty five year old associate music Professor Stephen Stace retired from Penn State University at Abington just weeks before investigators came calling with serious allegations of child pornography involving a 16 year old girl in Spain.

"He had possession of images of boys and girls, inappropriate sexual content, and that was all over his computer," DA Risa Vetri Ferman told FOX 29.

The DA says that Dr. Stace used the computer at his East Pennsylvania Avenue home in Upper Dublin along with his office email account at Penn State Abington to transmit and access photos of the teenage girl in various stages of nudity. He's also charged with taking nude photographs of himself inside his on-campus office at Woodland Hall, then sending them to the teenager.

"Video images, photographic images, discussions about meeting to get together for these sexual purposes," Ferman explained.

The new allegations come just as Penn State is recovering from the Jerry Sandusky child sex scandal that rocked the University's Happy Valley campus. Students at the Abington campus were upset with these latest allegations.

"I was sickened by it and I thought it was literally disgusting. I don't know why somebody would do such a thing," said second year student Stephanie Miller.

"I'm in the Art Department, so that's like really close to where I am in getting my education," said junior Becky Ressler.

No one answered the door at Stace's Upper Dublin home on Friday. DA Ferman says that detectives tracked his activities after a tip to the Internet Crimes Task Force.

Penn State officials say that they cooperated completely with the investigation. Ferman says the university helped detectives freeze Dr. Stace's campus email account so they could review it. Stace also cooperated with investigators when he was confronted, but then allegedly tried to cover it up.
"He spoke to a detective about what happened and then he immediately went back and tried to delete his email communication," Ferman added.

"I'm glad he's gone. I would not feel safe with him here," Miller added.

The DA says that Professor Stace also tried to make arrangements to meet the 16 year old. He was released on $75,000 bail. He faces a preliminary hearing on the charges later this month.
