Ridgewood Circulars Ban - New York News

Ridgewood Circulars Ban

Posted: Updated:
Ridgewood, New Jersey (My9News) -

Almost all residents of New Jersey get coupon circulars dropped on their lawn occasionally, but now lawmakers in Ridgewood want to crack down on these stray pieces of paper. The town considers these paper circulars to be litter on their well-manicured lawns and they want them to stop.

Mayor Paul Aronsohn recently supported a village-wide ban on paper circular distribution.

“We were told there was nothing we could do about it, that it was a First Amendment issue," Aronsohn says.  "To me it doesn’t seem like a First Amendment issue. I don’t think anyone should have the right to put anything on someone else’s property. I can’t just go on my neighbor’s lawn and start spewing my political views."

Most of the Ridgewood residents who were approached by Chasing New Jersey didn’t seem to be bothered by the circulars. In fact, some people said they rely on the coupons in the circulars and local businesses need this resource to advertise and bring in business in hard economic times.

Aronsohn is still pushing this issue however. He said that this is also a matter of security. These circulars are thrown on people’s lawns on Fridays, and if they sit there all weekend, burglars can take that as a sign that no one is home and they have easy access to rob a home.

Recently the mayor cut a deal with Stephen Borg, the President of North Jersey Media group which prints and distributes these circulars, as well as the Bergen Record Newspaper.   Borg agreed to put an opt-out number in larger print on the front of the paper for those who don’t wish to receive the circulars anymore.

It might seem silly that circular distribution is causing so many problems because this is certainly not the most important Ridgewood issue the mayor and council are dealing with right now. Councilman Thomas Riche has been accused of obtaining hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal contracts for his business through the village. Currently Riche is still on the council and may not even be punished.

More on that story next week.
