Is NJ Becoming A Red State?

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Governor Chris Christie and Senator Barbara Buono had their first of two debates last night. With Christie in the lead in the polls, is there anyone really paying attention to these debates? Do these debates even matter?

David Webb, a conservative radio talk show host, doesn’t believe that these debates matter at this point. In regards to Christie, “All he has to do is, for the next 29 days, stay very even keel. He’s got this record of success, he’s got things he can point to, he’s got the tool kit he’s put together. He’s had education reform, so it’s just stay even keel, win his race, and then move on to the next task.” He said.

It’s surprising that in a historically Democratic state that the democratic candidate isn’t getting any traction in the polls. In fact, Buono hasn’t gotten any support nationally. Vice President Joe Biden decided not to come to New Jersey due to the government shutdown, and she has little local support.

Webb says it’s a matter of urban areas versus the rest of the state. “It’s the Garden State for a reason. It’s not all Newark, Camden. It’s not all urban population, and those aren’t enough to carry her.” He said.

Webb also feels that people are seeing the past mistakes of Democrats in New Jersey and are turning to a Republican candidate. “Look at what’s happened. You have McGreevey’s millionaire tax, drove billions of dollars of business out of the state. You had Corzine, failure. Now you have Christie who comes in and starts making changes, and they’re actually successes.” He said.

The people of New Jersey are seeing that Christie is giving them solutions, and like him. Recent polls have shown that people favor Christie, but not in terms of education, taxes, and the budget. Some are questioning if people are actually paying attention to the real issues when they’re voting.

Webb says that they are paying attention to their money, what money they have and what they can do with it. “People think about kitchen table issues, and they’re looking at the government, going ‘Are you fixing problems so that I can fix my issues?” He said.

It seems that New Jersey is moving away from its Democratic past and the only way for Democrats to stop this is to change their policies, according to Webb. With Democratic success in capturing legislature and senate seats, there seems to be little chance of this change occurring. “They’ve got to get away from the type of tax and spend policies that they have never left since the ‘60s.” Webb said.
