Banksy takes New York

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

You may think this is standard New York City graffiti. But it's definitely not. These are part of a series called "Better Out than In" by the British street artist Banksy. They even come with audio commentary.

The works have been popping up all over the city and when they do throngs of Banksy groupies go on a fanatic hunt to find them.

The treasure hunt starts on Instagram, where Banksy posts a picture of a new piece with a vague location, such as "Red Hook."

That's where a red broken heart balloon made its debut Monday.

But it was quickly defaced by rival graffiti artist Omar. And then tagged again with a dig to Omar that some even think Banksy wrote himself.

But no one really knows because that's the thing about Banksy -- everything about him is shrouded in mystery, including his real identity.

While some of the works are being defaced, others have been removed altogether like Tuesday's installation in Greenpoint. Around noon Banksy Instagrammed a picture of a fake Plato quote on a blue background. A couple of hours later, discovery on Freeman Street on the door of an industrial building. But by 3 p.m. it was gone.

Instagram users hot on the Banksy trail posted pictures of workers taking down the door. Hashtag dolla-dolla bills.

After all some of Banksy's other street works have sold for more than a million bucks, even if some do think he's a bit too gimmicky.

Back in Red Hook the owners of the building with the red balloon decided to play it safe and put up Plexiglas to prevent any more graffiti on top of the graffiti.

Fans now waiting to see what tomorrow will bring, if it brings anything Banksy at all. Part of his game is that fans never know when it will end.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
