DPD chief hosting first "Chief's Call to Action"

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

This weekend, Detroit police Chief James Craig is expected to urge residents to stand up and take back city streets.

Craig's is hosting Detroit Police Department's first-ever "Chief's Call To Action." The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Triumph Church on East Grand Blvd.

Officers will provide information on how to start block clubs and neighborhood citizen patrols, hoping to revitalize the city that has one of the nation's highest violent-crime rates. Last year, Detroit recorded 386 criminal homicides, a 12 percent increase over 2011.

VanDyke Liquor Market owner, Steve Bahoura, has resorted to sleeping in his store after, he says, it has been broken into multiple times. The latest break in happened earlier this week. Surveillance video shows the suspect hooked up a vehicle to the back door, drove forward and pulled the door with him right off the hinges.

"If a thief wants to come, he will come. They don't care," Bahoura tells Fox 2's Robin Schawrtz.

"We just have to get engaged. We can't just sit back and watch the news and not do anything. It's just too personal. Crime is too personal," Rev. and radio talk show host Angelo Henderson says. He will join Craig and other church leaders Saturday at the event, working to get the community engaged and excited to take back the city.
