Business leaders cheer de Blasio

NEW YORK (AP) -- A year ago Bill de Blasio was an overlooked New York City mayoral candidate who was coldly received by a group of business leaders when he outlined his plan to raise taxes on the wealthy.

De Blasio returned to the same gathering on Friday as the favorite to become mayor, and was greeted with a standing ovation.

De Blasio is the public advocate and Democratic nominee. He addressed the Association for a Better New York in a Times Square hotel ballroom.

He said he knew not everyone would agree with his plan. But de Blasio said the group would have to work together to fight income inequality.

De Blasio leads Republican rival Joe Lhota by nearly 50 points in the polls. The general election is Nov. 5.
