KINGS POINT, N.Y. (AP) - The federal government shutdown has given hundreds of students at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point an early break.
Unlike the other U.S. service academies, the Merchant Marine Academy on Long Island is operated by the Department of Transportation.
Newsday reports that because of the government shutdown, officials at the academy decided to start an annual fall break on Friday instead of Nov. 1.
A statement on the academy website says if the shutdown continues beyond Oct. 14, the academy will stay closed. Students will then be paid to fly back to campus from their families' homes once it reopens.
The academy trains graduates in various disciplines that support the maritime industry.
Graduates must serve five years on active-duty in the military or work as mariners.

Smearing lip balm on your eyelids may seem an odd way to spend your weekend. Dr. Robert Cykiert would even tell you it's a really stupid way to spend your weekend. But a quick Twitter search on a Friday or Saturday night reveals plenty of kids doing just that. They call it 'beezin'."
