Police: 'Redbox Robber' made thousands stealing DVDs

A FOX 10 EXCLUSIVE

PHOENIX - It's a service that lets you rent DVDs and video games, straight from a kiosk at locations all over the place. But this valley man is accused of robbing these Redbox kiosks using a pretty elaborate scheme.

It was a scheme that netted him tens-of-thousands of dollars. Police say he was reselling these DVDs and games and then using the cash to fund his drug habit.

Vincent Bandin was booked into jail on 49 felony charges all stemming from stealing thousands of dollars' worth of DVDs from valley Redbox locations.

According to an arrest report by Phoenix Police, Bandin stole more than 670 DVDs. He would then take those DVDs and sell them to places like GameStop for cash or store credit.

He would take the store credit and transfer that to gift cards -- and in turn sell those. The report says in some cases he would trade the stolen DVDs for meth.

Once he would get one of the DVDs out of the machine, he would take the barcode off of the DVD and place it onto the case -- that way as he was returning it, the computer would read it as if that DVD was still inside, police said.

Police say he stole nearly $31,000 worth of movies.

But before you think about doing this -- remember Redbox has your credit card, which it can charge.

Police say Bandin was using untraceable cards to get the DVDs. He would do this two to three times a day, seven days a week for about a year. Before he was caught and thrown in jail Wednesday.

A man who says he is Vincent's father told us son has been in trouble for years, and he's not surprised.

"Cops know him already, they told me he got in more and more trouble and that's what he did, eh?" said the man, who did not give us his name.

According to court paperwork, Bandin has a number of felonies and outstanding warrants.
