Teen Who Lost Limbs to Meningitis Goes Home

Posted: Updated:

Kaitlyn Dobrow has been anxious to see her dogs and her home.  Eight months ago Katie, as her family calls her, was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.  The disease spread through her limbs, cutting off the blood supply, eventually causing the orange county teen to lose her arms and legs.

Though it's exciting, being home is also strange.  "It feels really different.  Because when I was here I was a different person, and then when I left I'm a completely and total other person," said Katie.

The house Katie grew up in was gutted.  A new bedroom went in on the first floor it's pink with a chandelier, just like 19 year old wanted.

Walls in the living room were torn down, to make bathrooms and doorways bigger for Katie's wheelchair and the family also spent $20,000 on a new van.

"That was bought with donated money. And the remodeling was done with donated money. People have been so amazing," said Kathi Dobrow, Katie's mom.

"There is so much love in the hearts of people out there and it's manifested in this situation, like you would not believe.  She's actually had prayers coming in from all over the world," said Don Dobrow, Katie's dad.

Katie's gotten stronger with therapy and is gaining independence.   "I can eat on my own, I can do my makeup on my own, I can take a shower," Katie told FOX 11.

While Katie suffered because she lost her limbs, what this family gained was a new outlook on life.

"Life is precious. We knew that, but the fact that we almost lost her just drives it home for us," said Kathi.

"You have to fight through it and tell yourself this isn't the end," said Katie.

For Katie the next step is getting prosthetics, but the family still needs financial help to pay for the more advanced prosthetics.  Then Katie says she plans to go back to school and get a job.
