In the midst of the federal government shutdown, religious leaders are speaking out in a variety of different ways about the United States government and the after effects of the shutdown, with one pastor hoping for a military coup.
Earlier this week, faith leaders called the budget crisis “morally irresponsible."
And, according to the Catholic Register
, the chairmen of three committees of the U.S. bishops wrote a joint letter to Congress.
"A just framework for future budgets cannot rely on disproportionate cuts in essential services to poor persons," they wrote. "It requires shared sacrifice by all, including raising adequate revenues, eliminating unnecessary military and other spending, and addressing the long-term costs of health insurance and retirement programs fairly."
Jewish leaders expressed concern
about the impact of the government shutdown. Communal leaders in Washington, D.C., mostly questioned how the shutdown would affect them.
For example, the Jewish federation of Detroit cancelled a planned mission to the nation's capital this week after news broke aboout the federal government shutdown.
But that might not be the worst of it, according to the Jewish Daily Forward
"For Jewish organizations dealing daily with federally funded programs, the shutdown's impact could be much more than a scheduling nuisance," reported the Daily Forward.
Progressive Christian leader Jim Wallis argued the dispute between the Democrats and Republicans isn't a political battle, but a spiritual one, according to the Blaze
“There is a deeper problem here than politics. There's a theological problem,” he said in a video monologue
he released. “As a Christian, I want to say shutting down government is unbiblical. Yes, that's what I'm saying - it's unbiblical.”
Some reactions are less basic. Televangelist Rick Joyner said the federal governmental system is broken. And the only hope, he said, is a military takeover - martial law.
On Monday, the Christian TV host Joyner revealed
this notion on his Morning Star TV show
with “Prophetic Perspective on Current Events.” The remarks were highlighted by RightWingWatch.org
"Raise up those who will save us," Joyner said on the broadcast. "Because the system is so broken … I believe our only hope is military takeover - martial law."
Joyner said he felt there were educated and capable members of the military who could run the country, and the most crucial aspect to a martial law state would be who the marshal or leader is.
But Joyner said he isn't advocating for a military takeover, but that it could happen and bring change to the country.
Joyner also predicted the destruction of America's republic and that people are going to turn to God, which will eventually establish a possible third Great Awakening, according to Charisma News
. He also said no election is going to solve America's problems and that “radical change” is needed.
Religious leaders are becoming united over the shutdown, according to Rev. C. Welton Gaddy, president of Interfaith Alliance, a non-partisan advocacy group for the interfaith movement. He told MSNBC
due to the "disgust" for the shutdown, religious leaders are joining together in disapproval.
"The financial shutdown qualifies as a moral failure of huge proportions," the reverend said.
