Kuma`s controversial `ghost` burger garnished with communion wafer

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A hamburger at a North Side restaurant is leaving a bad taste for some Catholics. The "Ghost Burger" is 10 ounces beef patty loaded with cheese, a spicy sauce, and topped off with an unconsecrated communion wafer and a red wine reduction sauce.

The burger is served at Kuma's Corner, a place that plays homage to heavy metal bands. This month, the restaurant chose to name the burger after the Swedish band Ghost B.C. Members of the band dress in religious robes and wear skeleton face makeup.

"Nothing here is blessed, so until then, it's just a cracker," Luke Tobias, Kuma's Corner director of operations explained.

"This is the best burger by far," customer Matthew Carreon said of the dish. "Like I said, it's a lot of fun, it's spicy but it's not overwhelming."

Alex Mondradon is a regular at Kuma's. He is Catholic and hasn't tried the burger, but says he will when he's hungry.

"It's just a hamburger," Mondadron said. "It's food you know. It's supposed to be the body of Christ. You can find the body of Christ everywhere like in a tree."

But, Simon Gurda at St. Helen's Catholic Church says the restaurant should stick to burgers and leave religion off the menu.

"Sometimes things start to cross the line and unfortunately, even a little bit of what you would call sacrilege if a bad thing," Gurda told FOX 32 News.

"I do find it offensive and I would not go to that sort of establishment," he added.

Tobias aid the restaurant never wanted to offend anyone. He said reaction has been a "mixed bag," but more positive than negative.

"We don't go out of way offend people," Tobias responded to the big reaction. "And we're not trying to upset people we just really like this band ghost and we wanted to do something for them."

The ghost burger will be on the menu for the entire month of October.
