Paralyzed man shot during home invasion

FAIRBURN, Ga. -

A man paralyzed from the waist down by a previous shooting gets into a gun battle with the armed robbers during an early morning home invasion in south Fulton County.

According to a spokesperson to the Fulton County Police Department, three men entered the back of a home on Greenwood Trace. The men, armed with guns, confronted the 40-year-old wheelchair-bound homeowner and demand cash and valuables.

The victim, 39-year-old Dennis Thomas, spoke with FOX 5 News by phone from his hospital bed at Grady Memorial Hospital. He says he was asleep when the gunman entered his home. He says he sleeps with a loaded gun under his pillow and used it when armed robbers confronted him.

"He said, ‘Roll over. I'm like, ‘Man, I'm in a wheelchair. Come on.' When I rolled over, I hide my gun under my pillow.  He started shooting, I started shooting too," said Thomas.

Police say Thomas was shot three times during the exchange of gunfire. He's expected to be OK.

His uncle, Frank Johnson, who lives with Thomas, ran for cover when he heard the shots ring out. He tells FOX 5 News he hid in a closet until the shooting stop.

Thomas told police he thinks he may have shot at least one of the suspects. They have alerted area hospitals to keep an eye out for gunshot wound victims.

Police believe the suspects had a getaway car parked nearby, but didn't get a description of it.

The incident is still under investigation.
