Veteran marathon runner Rochelle Trotter explained what you should be eating and drinking while you prepare for a big race. She also shared a recipe for a natural alternative to sports drinks.

If you want a natural alternative to sports drinks, why not make your own? This tart drink is high in electrolytes, potassium and anti-inflammatory properties to help keep you fueled during your run.

Tart Cherry Sports Drink Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 cups distilled water
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup raw honey
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 cup tart cherry juice (no added sugar/not from concentrate)
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Pour 1/2 cup of the distilled water in a microwave safe bowl and heat to boiling.
  2. Add honey and salt and stir until dissolved.
  3. Pour this honey mixture into a cold pitcher and add all remaining ingredients.
  4. Stir until well mixed.
  5. Refrigerate until use.
