Tim Skubick: What do Sen. Whitmer and Sen. Cruz have in common?

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

What do Sen. Gretchen Whitmer and Sen. Ted Cruz have in common?

Right, they're both senators, but clearly Democratic State Senator Whitmer and GOP U.S. Senator Cruz share nothing else in common…except this.

They both engaged in an effort to get what they wanted knowing full well the effort would fail yet they did it anyway.

Sen. Cruz talked for 22 hours the other day in an attempt to talk Obamacare to death.  He knew, the rest of the senate knew, the president knew and now you know it was ill-fated from his opening word.

Sen. Whitmer tried the other day to move up the effective date of the state's hotly contested Medicaid expansion measure.  Senate Republicans declared it would take effect on April 1 instead of Jan. 1 which is what the governor and Democrats favored.

By attempting to adjourn the legislature this week, Ms. Whitmer could have changed the date.  But she knew, the rest of the senate knew, the governor knew and now you know it was a Cruz-like gambit that was doomed to go bust before she was even done with her five-minute speech.

Some in Washington, even some from his own party, declared the Cruz filibuster a "stunt" and a grandstanding attempt to draw attention to his own desire to run for president.  He denied the charge.

Nobody called the Whitmer move a stunt, but her critics may eventually get around to that and she strenuously denied that she was grandstanding.

So what was the difference between the two acts of futility?

She contends she was working on something that was inevitable i.e. the implementation of the expansion while her counterpart in D.C. was titling at something that would not happen i.e. the repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

Ms. Whitmer explains she is going to use every procedural tool she can to get what she wants, even though she won't get it.

And Mr. Cruz probably had the same thought.

So do you see much difference in what they both did?
