Raquel Welch: We Were Sisters From Another Mother

Posted: Updated:

Raquel Welch, still stunning after all these years.

See for yourself Saturday night in the Lifetime TV movie, "House of Versace."  Raquel plays Donatella Versace's Aunt Lucia, and as she told Steve Edwards and Maria Sansone on Good Day L.A., it's a role she wouldn't commit to playing until she knew who was playing Donatella.

And when she found out Gina Gerson was cast, she was in. "Everything depends on who plays Donatella. And Gina killed it. I hope she gets the recognition she's long deserved for her acting chops."

The movie tells a well-known story — the vicious murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace — but reminds viewers how his sister, the temperamental Donatella, almost squandered her brother's legacy through a series of terrible business decisions and the usual fashionista temptations of pills and cocaine.

The woman Raquel plays, Aunt Lucia, was a reserved woman who had no interest in fashion and who cared for the Versace's mother, Franca, the mastermind of the family brand, when she was ill.  As the New York Post tells it, Franca had a successful bridal gown business; Lucia's idea of fashion was a well-constructed suit, practical and understated in its elegance.  "When Franca was dying, she made Lucia promise to look after the kids," Welch said.
