Christie May Not Stand In Way After Judge's Gay-Marriage Ruling

Posted: Updated:

Same-sex couples could start getting married in New Jersey in less than a month. A judge ruled Friday that civil unions are just not enough and that the state must allow same-sex couples to marry.

Gov. Chris Christie has said he's against gay marriage, but he may not stand in the way.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce was live in Ewing on Friday night with the details of the ruling.

The judge's ruling says that same-sex marriages could begin Oct. 21, but according to Christie's office the attorney general plans to appeal the judge's decision and send the case to the Supreme Court.

Judge Mary Jacobson ruled Friday that the state must allow same sex couples to marry. In her decision, she said now that the federal government recognizes gay marriage, not doing so in New Jersey would violate the state constitution. The ruling would allow same-sex couples federal benefits, which they do not currently receive with civil unions.

While Christie was at an event Friday afternoon or a groundbreaking at the College of New Jersey, we tried to get his reaction to the ruling. But the governor ignored the question.

The governor's office later released a statement that read: "Governor Christie has always maintained that he would abide by the will of the voters on the issue of marriage equality and called for it to be on the ballot this Election Day. Since the legislature refused to allow the people to decide expeditiously, we will let the Supreme Court make this constitutional determination."

We'll have to wait and see if the decision could be overruled by the Supreme Court. If it's upheld, New Jersey would become the 14th state to allow gay marriage, Joyce reported.
