Retired Boxer Arrested 26 Years After His Manager's Murder

Posted: Updated:
San Fernando, CA -

(FOX 11) The Los Angeles Police Department arrested Wednesday, 50 year old retired heavyweight boxer Exum Speight for the murder of Douglas Stumler, the boxer's manager in the mid 1980's. Speight was arrested in San Fernando without incident.

Stumler was brutally killed in his West LA apartment on March 29, 1987.  Detectives looked at Speight back then, but didn't have enough evidence against him.  Speight's fight career continued as the murder case went cold.  His career went cold and he retired in 2001.   His final record wasn't impressive, far more losses than wins, but you can find one fight on YouTube.  In 1996, he fought a young Wladimir Klitschko.  Klitschko is now the reigning heavyweight champ.

And, today the LAPD's cold case squad look like champs. Detectives describe the crime scene as violent and bloody.  DNA at the scene matched the victim and Speight.  But they didn't find that out until a quarter century after the murder.  LAPD sent DNA to the National Institute of Justices' Cold Case DNA Program.  Detectives got a hit then after a year interviewing the victm's friends and chasing other leads, they were able to arrest Speight. He'll be in court Thursday.

Here's a link to the program that lead to Speight's arrest and saved LA residents money.

Six people were indicted Wednesday in an international ring that managed to take over more than 1,000 StubHub users' accounts and fraudulently buy tickets to such prime events as Jay-Z and Elton John concerts, a New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox game and Broadway shows like "The Book of Mormon," the Manhattan district attorney said. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said the thieves would then resell the tickets and split up the proceeds.
