Fish, nuts may not be as great for the brain afterall

Omega-3 fatty acids do a lot of good things for our bodies, but preserving memory may not be one of them. In fact a new study finds foods like fish and nuts may not benefit our thinking skills as we age, especially women.

"Pmega-3 fats did not have an effect on cognitive function in women," Kate Patton, a registered dietician at Clevelend Clinic, says.

University of Iowa researchers studied the effects of omega 3's on nearly 2,200 women between 65 and 80 years old for six years. They found no difference between the women with high and low levels of omega-3's in their blood. There was also no difference between the two groups in how fast their thinking skills declined over time, but researchers say fish and nuts are still a good alternative to red meat and high fat dairy.

"Omega-3 fats are an essential fat, which means your body can't make this type of fat. So, you do need to get it in your diet through sources like fatty fish, such as salmon, or tuna, or sardines. You can also get omega-3 from plant-based sources such as flaxseed or walnuts," Patton adds.

If you do want to help your brain stay healthy, recently a neurologist told me stay away from sugars and starches and stick to fruits, vegetables and healthy protein as much as possible.
