Caterpillars infest Ahwatukee neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
AHWATUKEE, Ariz. -

Parts of the valley are dealing with an invasion of these critters -- caterpillars. In some places, hundreds, even thousands of caterpillars in the middle of the road.

In Ahwatukee southeast of Pecos and 40th Street there is a mystery brewing. What is all over the street here? As you can see it looks like something has been smashed all over this intersection.

What we discovered is that all of these were at one point caterpillars.

"They are all over the place. Looks like carpet, yellow carpet," said Joal Watson.

"They were covering the street almost to the capacity of 50 percent," said Elizabeth Sparks.

They are moving as if in search of something. What some believe is that with the increase of construction and development nearby, the caterpillars are looking for a place to transform into a butterfly.

"Last year we were driving down this street and it was covered in yellow. We didn't know what they were and so we were asking around and we didn't know what they were and a few days later butterflies all over the place," said Watson.

"I think it's so cool and I love that I have kids and you don't always get to see all that and it's kind of a science experiment."

Some drivers in the area say they also saw the caterpillars at the outlet mall nearby.

Out of over 500 hopefuls only a handful will join the Brooklyn Nets Kids Dance Team. The Nets held auditions this week at LIU Brooklyn. Adorable Bronx native Arielle was turned away last year but this time around she's made it through to the final round of the auditions. But even those who were on the team last year still have to try out.
