Watch: Pedestrians walk, drive by and ignore liquor store theft

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Sunday morning a suspect rammed what appears to be a U-Haul van into the side of Y & B Market in Midtown four times until he smashed through the glass wall and steel bars, security footage at the store reveals. The suspect then stole cash out of the cash registers, even taking one of the machines with him when he couldn't get it to open.

But someone else was caught on camera - something that the store's owner Billy Yasi says bothers him more than being stolen from. It's people walking and driving by at the time of the incident, and everyone appears to completely ignore what was happening.

"8:11 this happened - on Sunday morning. People go to the church, people walking through, and they see him doing that and nobody said nothing. Nobody called police," Yasi tells Fox 2's Taryn Asher.

Click on the video player above to watch Asher's report and see the surveillance footage.

What makes matters worse to Yasi is that the Detroit Police Dept.'s Central District is right across the street. Officers weren't aware of the situation until they got a call from Consumers Energy, telling them a gas line was down. Turns out, the suspect hit one when he was driving the vehicle into the building. The police then contacted and told Yasi the news.

Despite it all, Yasi refuses to close down the store he says his family has operated for more than 100 years.

Robert De Niro says Tribeca Film Festival is his passion

Robert De Niro is a family man, a filmmaker, an entrepreneur and one of my favorite actors of all time. He's also a co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, which has more to see than ever before. De Niro wears just as many hats on screen as he does in real life. The father of six starred in six films last year, owns four restaurants and a hotel, and still finds time each spring for the Tribeca Film Festival, Lower Manhattan's annual cinematic showcase.
