Tent City Documentary

Posted: Updated:
Lakewood, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

The red carpet was laid out for the screening of “Destiny’s Bridge” a documentary about Lakewood’s tent city. This homeless encampment has over 100 people living in the woods in Ocean County, New Jersey.

The documentary was made by Jack Ballo who took the time to get to know these people and how they live.

Minister Steve who is responsible for organizing this group of people in Lakewood was on hand to answer questions. Throughout the documentary you can see Minister Steve sticking up for the rights of these homeless people even going as far as getting arrested and making court appearances in his ongoing fight to help those in need.

Lakewood Township wants these people off of public land. Minister Steve said that they are not using tax-payers money, they simply cannot afford housing on their own and so they created this community.

Lakewood is not the only community that has a tent city, there are these neighborhoods popping up all over New Jersey in cities like: Camden, Toms River, Union City, Hoboken, Browns Mills and more.

On Thursday the Unites States Congress just cut $4 billion out of funding and support for the homeless, for food stamps and a lot of other things that people in these positions rely on.

So while New Jersey may be feeling the brunt of this tent city trend, homelessness is really a national problem.
