Cost saving measure: No meat on the menu at Sheriff Arpaio's MCSO jails

FOX 10 EXCLUSIVE

Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Maricopa County jails have made national headlines for years.

First there was the construction of Tent City in 1993, then there was the introduction of the infamous pink underwear he makes the inmates wear -- and now he's at it again.

The Sheriff has announced he's turning his jails -- vegetarian!  No more meat will be served in Arpaio's jails.

Arpaio isn't doing this for the inmates' health.  He says he's doing it to save money.

Instead of beef, the jails were now serve soy.

The inmates will be charged for the meals and that change will go into effect in the next couple of months.

Video: The Sheriff invited FOX 10's Troy Hayden into the jail's kitchen to see how he prepares what the inmates call "slop."

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
