Police: Homeowner Says He Fought Off 2 Home Invaders

PHILADELPHIA -

A developing story out of Philadelphia's Frankford section: a homeowner fights back when men with guns try to break into his house in the middle of the day. Police say the homeowner didn't hesitate to take matters into his own hands.

On the 5200 block of Sylvester Street is where crime scene tape marks the address where the mid-day mayhem went down. The homeowner has not been identified, but a neighbor describes him as a man in his late 30s to early 40s. Police are hunting for two alleged home invaders, one of whom may be in search of help from a local hospital. As uniformed police stood guard outside the home, neighbors on the usually quiet block reacted to the news of armed men shattering their sense of security.

"It's scary," says Neighbor Vernette Harris. "Get a dog maybe, yeah."

A homeowner told police that two men burst through his back door around 12:30 in the afternoon, apparently intending to rob him.

"Complainant got a hold of one of the weapons from the individuals and fired shots. So we think one of the doers may be hit," says Inspector Michael Cochrane of the Philadelphia Police. "He thinks he shot one of the guys."

Neighbor Philip Robinson says he was getting his fix of sports highlights on TV in the afternoon when his dogs began to bark.

"When I hear barking, I go check on [my dog]. Then when I checked on him, that's when I heard a couple of pop, pop, pop, pop. That's when I ‘whoa, that sounded like shots.' I came back up, came to the front door. I didn't see nothing," he recalled.

That's because the action was out back and next door. Police say the homeowner told them that two men, both of them armed, broke into the back door of his home.

"Yes. That's what he's telling us, and got off one or two, several shots, and as I stated, he believes he shot one of the males and we did find a blood trail at the end of the driveway," says Inspector Cochrane.

A trail of blood out back would appear to support that claim. The homeowner was uninjured and the two men took off. The homeowner told police that he they were strangers, which puts neighbors all the more on edge.

Carmen Lopez was visiting her sister Isabel when the shots rang out.

"Nice neighborhood before, but it's getting bad," said Lopez. "I want to move out of here."

Robinson was visiting his mother's house. He doesn't know much about the homeowner except that he's impressed with his reaction, at least from what he heard. Robinson calls this a generally quiet neighborhood but the thought of armed intruders bursting into a home in broad daylight had him worried.

"Make you lock your doors a lot tighter. A whole lot tighter, you know," he says.

The homeowner has been over at northeast detectives all afternoon. Police have lots of questions about exactly what went down and why. They have recovered a .45 caliber handgun and a bullet.

Again, lots of questions as to exactly what happened, but at the moment it is believed that there are two men out there, alleged home invaders, one of whom may have been injured in the scuffle and looking for some sort of help at the hospital.
