91 Freeway Widening Project - Opening Up The IE

Posted: Updated:

When it comes to transportation Riverside County is unique. It has a couple hundred thousand people who live there, but don't work there and have big commutes many of which start as early as 5am. Through Corona traffic was horribly backed up on the 91 when we arrived there at 5:20am.

A year and a half ago a major freeway expansion project began to add 6 miles of HOV lanes and, now, there are no less than 8 major projects in an area 20 miles around Riverside. Twice in recent years Riverside residents have voted half-cent sales taxes to raise money for such transportation projects. The measures in both cases were Measure A. But, now that many of these projects are underway in earnest a lot of people find the construction work a mess.

Virtually every public official I spoke with understood the sentiment. They even said the traffic congestion affects them, but Terri Kasinga with CalTrans says during such times people have to plan accordingly. That, she says, is what she does.
