DETROIT (myFOXDetroit.com) -

Detroit Public Schools is still enrolling for its Second Chance Program, a credit recovery program that kicked off this week for students 16-19 years of age who are at least one year behind in high school credits.

"This is another opportunity for Detroit students to earn credits toward a High School diploma," said Karen Ridgeway, Superintendent of Academics.

Students who meet the criteria are strongly encouraged to register at one of the five High School locations offering the program: East English Village Preparatory Academy, Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School, Western International High School, Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men and West Side Academy.

The Second Chance Program meets Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Students receive free meals, bus cards, and supplies. The program is offered at no cost.

DPS tells Fox 2 that program times may vary. Check with schools or call 313-240-4DPS.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
