Amanda Shires: Down Fell The Doves

Posted: Updated:

"He's handsome, talented, sings well." Amanda Shires was not describing Steve on Good Day LA but her husband Jason Isbell. The singer songwriter is on tour with him promoting her fourth solo album "Down Fell The Doves".

Amanda talked to Steve and Maria about "murder ballads", bagels, and Conan O'Brien's massage chair. Steve also asked her about the name of her husband's band, "the 400 Unit". That was the insanity ward in a hospital in Alabama.

"They get out of the van sometimes all together and they feel like they're just crazy people getting out into a new town."

Amanda also performed during the show...giving viewers a sample of the main course she would be delivering at Solana Beach Tuesday night.

Fun facts about Amanda:

  • She is an American singer and violin player. She has performed as a member of the Texas Playboys, Thrift Store Cowboys and Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, in a duo with Rod Picott, and has released four solo albums.
  • Shires released her first solo album, the mostly instrumental Being Brave, in 2005. Four years later, having relocated to Nashville, she released West Cross Timbers and in the same year released Sew Your Heart with Wires, a collaboration with Rod Picott. Her next solo album, Carrying Lightning was released in 2011, followed by Down Fell The Doves in August 2013.
  • In 2011 she appeared in the movie Country Strong as one of the musicians backing singer Kelly Canter, played by Gwyneth Paltrow.
