DETROIT (WJBK) -

Tennis great Andre Agassi was on hand for a grand opening of a new Detroit charter school.

The school's new building comes thanks to a $10 million contribution from Agassi's Canyon-Agassi Charter School Facilities Fund, which builds new schools or renovates existing buildings for charter management companies.

"It was overwhelming when I drove because this has been a vision of ours for a long time," said Agassi, who attended Tuesday's grand opening event.

Classes started Sept. 3 at the Southwest Detroit Lighthouse Charter Academy, where music, dance, art and theater are interwoven in the curriculum.

The Southwest Detroit Lighthouse Charter Academy is the first charter school in Michigan to benefit from Agassi's fund. Nationwide, there are roughly two dozen already and plans for more in the coming years.

"When you look at Detroit, you see what they've gone through in recent times and this is a great time to invest in the community," said Agassi.

Things are looking up for cute little Cami King. Not only is her cancer in remission, she also just got to meet Mickey, Minnie and Elmo in Times Square. But, if you can believe it, there's something else this 4-year-old is even more excited about: Times Square is going gold. The chairman of the Times Square Advertising Coalition announced the crossroads of the world is going to light up in gold to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research.
