Christie & New Jersey’s Economy

Florhan Park, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Governor Christie is back on the campaign trail and this time he visited Florham Park, New Jersey where he planted a tree.

Julian Zeilizer, Professor of History and Public Affairs at Princeton University chimed in to discuss a recent article written by Tom Moran on NewJersey.com where he criticized the Governor for being “overrated”.  Julian says that “I think Christie will face some questions about some of the claims he’s made about the economy and other issues.”

But when it comes to a higher office, does Governor Christie have a strong successful record to run on? Julian said, “He clearly has weaknesses. The state is not at the top of the competition, there are certainly areas of the economy where most people would agree Christie has not achieved what he has set out to do.”

Julian describes Christie’s biggest weakness being the economy saying, “There have been some areas of economic growth but overall, like much of the nation, he can’t claim to have revitalizes the state in the same way that other states can boast of really vibrant economies at this time.”

The same article in question also stated that 50% of people don’t agree with Christie’s handling of education, taxes and the economy, but those same people overwhelmingly support him by 60-plus-percent.

Julian describes this as “Discrepancies between personality and policy.  Some of the positions he’s taken on teacher’s, education, pensions, have been unpopular once he tried to do what he wanted to do rather than talking about it, but he has a personality that many people like.”

In New Jersey, poverty rates are up, foreclosures are up, property taxes are up and all of these things negatively affect the Governor.  But Julian says these problems really are on a higher level.  He said, “My guess is he’s not going to reverse those without the national economy doing better.  I think if he has something tangible to say when he ran, this is what I did besides just lower taxes, that could improve the situation for him politically.”

StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
