Lawyer: Children allegedly murdered by mother to be buried in Georgia

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

The father of two children police say were murdered by their mother has checked himself into a hospital in DeKalb County.

Police have charged 42-year-old Marilyn Edge with killing her 13-year-old autistic son and 9-year-old daughter in California after a judge ordered them returned to their father, Mark Edge, in Georgia. The children's bodies were found on Saturday.

"The children did die by poisoning," said Marian Weeks, the attorney for Mark Edge.  "I understand after they were poisoned, they were put in a Jacuzzi and drowned. I think they were already dead by that point."

Weeks said that Mark Edge is at the VA Medical Center recovering from the shock of losing two children.

"Emotional distressed – he was checked in yesterday morning…he checked himself in," Weeks said.

Weeks said that Mark and Marilyn Edge divorced in 2007.  After a custodial battle that lasted several years, a court granted Mark Edge full custody of the two children last week.

Marilyn Edge, who moved to Arizona a year ago, was in court last week and was supposed to return Sunday with the kids.  Instead, she turned up in Costa Mesa where police say she rammed into an electrical box and tried to strangle herself with electrical wires. She then led police to the motel room where they discovered the two children.

"Mark and I would not have been surprised at all if she had not shown up on Sunday -- had run with the children, but neither of us ever anticipated she would do this to the children," said Weeks.

Weeks says once the bodies of the Jaelen and Faith are released by crime scene investigators, they'll be returned to metro Atlanta for burial.

Southern California authorities say Marilyn Edge now faces life in prison.
