Tropicorium employees charged with federal wildlife crimes

Posted: Updated:

Two men are charged with conspiracy for taking, transporting and selling coral, sea fans, tropical fish, alligators and nurse sharks.

The federal indictment says Richard Perrin, owner of Tropicorium in Romulus, and Joe Franko, an employee at the store, traveled to the Florida Keys twice in 2011 with a towing boat and a specially equipped Chevy van, where they illegally harvested a number of protected species.

Perrin was caught trying to sell the illegal marine life to an undercover agent at the Tropicorium.

Bill Lamb was a previous customer of the Tropicorium. He's a marine life enthusiast, like many of Perrin's customers, and is outraged over the allegations.

If convicted, both men could spend up to ten years in prison.
