Christmas retail creeping

Toys R Us in Times Square is offering Black Friday-style discounts this week. Yes, holiday shopping is creeping into September.

Kmart released its first holiday shopping TV spot aimed at layaway shoppers 100 days before Christmas. In 2012 Kmart didn't air its first ad until after Halloween.

For retailers who had disappointing back to school sales there may be little downside to Christmas creeping, as it's called.

"I think the idea is that you shop now and forget and shop even bigger discounts and keep the ball rolling," said Adrianne Pasquarelli of Crain's New York. "I think getting any sales at this point are what retailers have in mind."

Toys R Us is offering 20 percent off starting Wednesday.

Walmart rolled out free layaway program in August.

According to last year's National Retail Federation survey, 41 percent of Americans said they start their holiday shopping before Halloween, and about 20 percent begin by the end of September.

So you may want to break out your silver bells and Santa hat. Christmas has crept up earlier this year and some are wondering if the holidays are becoming a year round experience.
