Who is Aaron Alexis?

The FBI has identified the gunman who opened fire at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday as Aaron Alexis, 34. When the rampage was over, 13 people were dead, including Alexis. The FBI issued a "seeking information" poster on its Website asking anyone who knew Alexis or came into contact with him recently to get in touch with agents and offer up as much information as possible.

This is what we know about Alexis so far from the FBI:

  • Born in Queens, N.Y., on May 9, 1979
  • 6 feet 1 inch tall, 190 pounds, brown hair, black hair (appears bald in at least 2 photos), African American
  • Last-known residence was in Fort Worth, Texas
  • Arrived in D.C. area around August 25, 2013, and stayed at hotels in the area
  • Moved to a Residence Inn in southwest D.C. since September 7, 2013
  • Legally purchased shotgun used in shooting in Virginia; did not appear to use an AR-15

Here is what we know from other sources about Alexis:

  • Served in the U.S. Navy Reserve, 2007-2011, achieving rank of petty officer 3rd class (The Associated Press)
  • Employed by an HP Enterprise Services subcontractor working on the Navy Marine Corps Intranet network (The Associated Press)
  • Spoke Thai, worked as a waiter at a Thai restaurant, and attended a Buddhist temple in Fort Worth (The Washington Post)
  • Arrested in Seattle in 2004 for shooting out the tires of another man in an anger-fueled "blackout"; case referred to court but wasn't charged (Seattle Police Department)
  • Arrested in Fort Worth in 2010 for discharging a firearm within city limits (fired a shot through ceiling into upstairs neighbor's apartment); booked but not charged (MyFoxDFW.com)
  • Lived in an apartment in Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, 11 years ago with family members (Fox 5 News)
  • Has family, including mother, currently living in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn (Fox 5 News)
  • Enrolled in an online bachelor's degree program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (The Associated Press)
  • Had been suffering a number of serious mental issues, including paranoia and a sleep disorder; reportedly had been hearing voices in his head (The Associated Press)
  • Purchased a Remington 870 pump-action shotgun and about two boxes of shells from SharpShooters gun shop in Virginia on September 15; passed instant background check (The Washington Post)
  • Had his federal security clearance renewed despite history of violence and psychological problems (FoxNews.com)

The machine is the size of a double refrigerator and uses oxygen to kill viruses and bacteria.
