ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

On Monday, jury selection will begin to choose the group who will hear evidence against Jeffery Trevino, who is facing second-degree murder charges in the disappearance and death of his wife, Kira Trevino.

A heartbroken community spent months searching in the dead of winter to find Kira Steger after her car was found at the Mall of America but she did not report for work. Her naked, decomposed body finally surfaced in the Mississippi River in May.

"The defendant in this particular case took a number of actions to be evasive and cover up this murder," Ramsey County Attorney John Choi said.

Initially, prosecutors charged Jeffery Trevino with second-degree murder before his wife's body was recovered. They argued they had the evidence, including copious amounts of blood in the Trevinos' home in St. Paul's Payne-Phalen neighborhood and a clear effort to clean it. From the spray bleach, the mop and the trail of blood leading to the laundry room, detectives say all of it pointed back to the Iowa Avenue house.

Surveillance video from the Mall of America shows a man was the last person to park Kira Trevino's car. He can be seen getting out, throwing what appears to be the trunk liner away, and then hops into a taxi. The GPS of that cab traced back to the area where the couple lived.

"The hardest thing for prosecutors is what's called a circumstantial evidence case," said Joe Tamburino, a criminal defense attorney in the Twin Cities who is not associated with the upcoming trial.

Without an eye witness or admission, prosecutors must connect all the dots to convince a jury to hand down a murder conviction. Meanwhile, the defense will need to create doubt and uncertainty.

"The defense has to argue, 'It wasn't me. Prove it. Nobody saw me do it. There's no video of me doing it. I never admitted to doing it. Prove it,'" Tamburino explained.

With the amount of media attention the case has generated, jury selection may take a few days. Once the opening statements are made and the trial begins, many witnesses and medical testimony is expected as prosecutors make their case against Jeffery Trevino, a man they say turned to brutal violence when his wife tried to file for divorce.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan gathered religious and city leaders with the focus of how to ease tensions between police and the community in advance of this Saturday's march to protest the death of Eric Garner. Some of the leaders in this group are rarely photographed together, let alone seated at the same table. But they were brought together over concerns about possible protest violence by the cardinal, one of the most powerful figures in the city and who commands respect across the board.
